On Wednedsay, three-hundred illegal immigrants were relaesed from an Arizona State Prison. As a border state, Arizona has a large population of illegal immigrants from Mexico, Central America, and South America. Some of these immigrants have been arrested for comitting various crimes, such as driving without a license. Others were arrested due to their lack of American citizenship. The release of these prisoners lead to a heated debate between Republican officials and Human Rights Activists. Overall, the Republican officials believed that the release of these aliens was unnecessary, dangerous, and harmful to the economy. On the other hand, Human Rights Activists beleive that these immigrants should be released because they fell prey to the government of Arizona. They also think that releasing the immigrants will benefit the country, because they would not have to invest money into their incarceration any longer.
In regards to the questions mentioned in class, these immigrants were originally incarcerated for both crimes commited, and illegal citizenship. Also, once released from prison the immigrants were released into America, not the country that the emigrated from.Since the release, the country has continued to release two-thousand more illegal immigrants from prison. This month, the Department of Homeland Security plans to release three thousand more illegal immigrants. The states who have released immigrants, and are still currently doing so include: Arizona, California, Georgia and Texas.

While considering both sides of the argument, what opinion do you agree with more? Based on this opinion, state what you beleive the next step should be regarding the inprisonment of illegal immigrants in America? If you do not agree with either opinion, please state your reasoning as well.

  1. I agree that is okay to let them out as long as the people released have not committed any major crimes such as armed robbery or murder that pose a threat to society. These are people who may be looking to make a better life for themselves and their families. America used to be the "land of opportunity". Now we have barriers, fences and laws to keep people out. America was built by immigrants who came to this country for the same reason, to make a better life for their family. Most of these people just want the same thing for themselves. Even though the United States has limited space and resources and cannot support everybody who wants to come over here, it is counterproductive to use these resources to imprison them, if they have not done anything wrong. The next step should be to grant amnesty to immigrants who have only committed misdemeanors, not felonies.

  2. I think that those illegal immigrants that were imprisoned should not have been realized back into Arizona. Even though they entered the country illegally, that doesn't change the fact that they are choosing to be a part of our country. They should do as the rest of us have to, follow the law. I don't think that "not knowing" the laws of Arizona is an excuse that shouldn't justify getting let out of prison. What is the difference between someone who was caught without a license who was born in the United States, or born in another country. Nothing, other than were they were born. For all we know, a citizen of the United States might not know the laws of the state that they are living in, but just because they were born in American that justifies them having to stay in prison when an illegal immigrant is let out? No, that is not okay. I think that if an illegal immigrant is caught breaking the law in the United States should be arrested and sent back to the country that they came from. If they really want to be a part of our nation, they will come into our country legally and become a citizen. I feel like this should apply to illegal immigrants that are caught no matter the severity of the crime they committed.
