Maxine Baker Current Event #2

http://articles.washingtonpost.com/2013-04-21/world/38718054_1_human-rights-violations-political-donations-u-s-policy

The article I found on the Washington Post is talking about how China "turned their tables” and is now criticizing the United States and its record on human rights. China is basically saying that the United States has a serious problem when it comes to sex, racial and religious discrimination. This discrimination plays a major role in the right to vote for American citizens. Also, China reported that we give out to many human rights to all the races in our country. We have many different races integrated into our small country and some of our human rights, like the right to bear arms, is a danger to everyone around us. These reports came out through the media after the United States stated it was wrong for the Chinese government to strengthen their voter’s requirements. China did this in hope to try and keep people how may rebel against the government out of the voters booths.

Why do you think that China thinks that the amount of human rights the United States allows its citizens is wrong, too much and dangerous? Do you agree or disagree with China's idea that United States citizens are allowed too many human rights of equality?

  1. The government of China likely thinks that keeping its residents safe is a priority over protecting their rights. Although, impeding on what is considered in the United States as everybody's second amendment rights, preventing people from owning guns reduces the risk of people getting hurt by them, purposefully or accidentally. I disagree that the United States gives its people too many rights. The United States and the Chinese government have different goals and different structures. It doesn't make sense to compare the two governments in a way that makes one seem better than the other.

  2. China most likely thinks we have rules that are not strict enough because they are used to a much less free society. Here we have dealt with so much segregation and restriction that we want as much freedom in life as possible. I think that we have just enough freedom, and some things may be too free but for the most part our government does a good job restricting only some things.

  3. I agree with what Ford said, their government probably cares more about the safety of its people rather than what rights they have. They are not trying to give their people too little rights, but the rights they get are not as liberating as an Americans rights. I think that China is wrong in saying that the government gives the people too many rights. China has a much higher population than America, so they may have trouble seeing how we run our government because we have less of a population.I also disagree that the rights we get are too dangerous. We have many rights that allow us to be successful in completing the American Dream, although some of these rights may seem too drastic, they are necessary for people to be happy and fulfill their American Dream.

  4. I think China is more concerned about the safety of a country and thinks that we have too much freedom. I disagree with China's idea that we have too many human rights because we need those rights for our country to be able to thrive. I agree with Sasha that our government does a good job with restricting certain things. Lastly, I agree with Ford when he mentions that China and the United States are completely different and have different goals and structures within their government.

  5. I completely disagree with what China said about our human rights. This country was founded on the fact that all people are created equal and that we deserve to have our rights. This foundation has made the United States into the greatest superpower in the world even with our recent economic downturn. I think that allowing our citizens their human rights makes them more capable of creating amazing technology and businesses. If those rights were taken away then our citizens wouldn't be able to do anything.

With regards on the danger of having rights such as the right to bear arms, I find it hard to argue that we should allow citizens access to powerful firearms. Out of every country on this earth, the United States is responsible for the most school shootings and I think that part of the reason this is true is because citizens have access to very strong weapons. So I could argue that China is somewhat correct in saying that some of these rights can be dangerous. I would not say that any of these rights should be taken away from anybody, just restricted and like Sasha said our government does restrict things from us. But China is defiantly incorrect in saying that freedom is a danger because we are the most successful country in the world and freedom is our foundation.

  6. I feel that China is very focused on keeping everyone as a single unit and to have everyone agree on ideas. I feel by restricting the rights of voters China feels it can keep everyone in a sense tame with their ideas and beliefs.
I disagree with what China is saying and thinking though. Being a human and alive means you have a mind of your own, and no person, government, or country should be able to take that away from you. America's foundation is the personification of what being human is which is freedom. Even though China is right about how some rights like the 2nd Amendment can be dangerous for people, it's the select few that cause it to be dangerous. A government shouldn't put restrictions on citizens in order to avoid rebelling because if they want to rebel, then something is being done wrong within the government. I can agree with Ford though that both the United States and China are separate countries that have different goals and ideals for their nation.

  7. It is apparent that the social and governmental values of China differs tremendously from that of America's. For example, one child is the legal number that a Chinese couple is permitted to have, and it is preferred that a family gives birth to a male.. China has a stricter system than American and the government is very involved in what people do and regulating nearly everything to protect the people and are capable of taking rights away in order to preserve stability in the country. That is why this article comes to no surprise when bringing to the surface China's differing views and them believing we are too loose with our system. I think that America is socially a very loose country, and we could have better regulations in that aspect, but also too much government involvement in human rights takes away the rights that were born along with this country. I personally think that Americans are a bit loose ended and wild that it can become a distraction.

  8. I agree with David. What gives this country success and innovation is the fact that we are guaranteed a certain set of rights that make every citizen as equal as possible. I do however find much difficulty in arguing that citizens should in fact have access to powerful firearms, The U.S is responsible for the most shootings and tragedies related to gun violence than any other place around the world. some restrictions are necessary given the correct circumstances, But I refuse to agree that freedom is a danger.
