My current even was on the recent changes to the gun restriction bill being pushed by Obama. The bill wanted to ban assault weapons and clips that can hold more than ten rounds. The senate dropped the ban from the bill, which has caused a large amount of controversy. Supporters of the bill believe that this ban should go through, and consider this a huge setback for Obama's gun control campaign. Many people oppose the bill (such as the National Rifle Association) because they believe that limiting people's access to guns is against their First Amendment right.
Do you think that the ban on assault weapons and large clips is restricting our freedom as Americans? Do you think that by dropping this ban, people will be at more of a threat?
I do not think that the ban on assault weapons is restricting our freedom as Americans. We have the right to bear arms, not to own military grade artillery. It is absolutely within our rights to protect ourselves, and our loved ones, however, we are asking for trouble by allowing military grade assault rifles to be bought and sold.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jack. Restricting the types of guns and ammo will give people a better sense of safety. I believe that restricting this will lower the rate of shootings all across America because these guns with less ammo would prevent some killings because the person controlling the gun would have to reload, and when doing so can allow people to get away, or take down the gunner. This is not restricting peoples rights because what legitimate excuse is there for owning a semi automatic gun or rounds that contain 100 plus bullets. You could not use it for hunting, and any type of pistol could fend of an intruder. To me, restricting this is the only sensible thing to do.
ReplyDeleteI don't believe that by restricting the use of such powerful guns is taking away liberty of Americans for it is not something that is harmless or useful. Guns will still be available, but guns with power like that are not needed and may threaten lives easily and will not be a problem if taken away.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, a ban on assault weapons and large clips is taking away freedom, but it is a necessary measure to keep our society safe. I believe that guns should only be used for recreational purposes, such as hunting or target shooting, or for protection. Recreational shooting only uses hunting rifles, and people who feel that they need a gun to protect themselves and others can use a small pistol. There are very few, if any, circumstances where someone would need an assault weapon or a gun with large clips.
ReplyDeleteIf this ban is dropped, people will not be at more of a threat. This is because someone, who would use a gun to do dangerous, violent things could obtain the gun on the black market, so the law would not really apply to them. That is why I think that unless the government and law enforcement agencies can stop these guns from being manufactured, it will be impossible to keep them off the street and out of the hands of potentially dangerous people.
