Mitt Romney is blaming his loss of the 2012 campaign on the fact that he did not connect to Hispanics or Latinos. These group of voters did not agree with his opinion opposing any illegal immigrant to becoming a citizen or to even live in the U.S. permanently. Romney does not agree with the reform package that Obama has now, which is that it will take a long time to become a citizen but still gives people the opportunity. Overall, Romney regrets that he did not connect with this group and felt that his campaign in this area was weak. He wishes he had improved his opinion in a way that he could have gotten votes from this race.

Do you agree or disagree that Mitt Romney lost the 2012 Presidential election because of his lack of connection with the minority populations of America? Why or why not?

  1. I do think that Mitt Romney lost because of his lack of connection with minorities in the United States. He often made these people out to be freeloaders, and his comment saying that 47 percent of the US population did not support themselves implied that he may have meant these people to be minorities. The Obama campaign certainly took advantage of this to make it seem like he did not care about minorities. It also makes him come across as a snob and an elitist. People do not usually put elitists and minorities in the same group. If you perceive someone as being an elitist you do not perceive them as being in a minority. People who care about minorities or are in a minority group would not be incline to vote for Romney. Other politicians, such as John Kerry are very wealthy but come across as "sticking up for the little guy". If Romney came across with a different message, more people may have voted for him.

  2. I agree that Romney should have connected better with those groups of people. Obama made sure he did so, while (as Ford said) Romney did not seem to support them at all. By coming across as so unwelcoming and not accepting those groups of people, they obviously would not vote for Romney and would want someone who would allow them to eventually have a chance at becoming a citizen of America.

  3. I strongly agree with this idea. Even to the upper and middle class people, he was seen as a rich big shot that basically just wanted the title of "President." There are way more minorities in this country than there are upper class people so if he ever thought he had a chance then he should have connected with the minorites much more, and the upper class. This is one thing that Obama did right. He connected with everyone and gave everyone a reason to vote for him! So for th upper class, it was half for Obama, and half for Romney; for the middle class it was half for obama and half for Romney; and for the lower class it was all for Obama. This is why Romney lost in my opinion.

  4. I do not believe that Mitt Romney lost because of his connection with the minority groups. I feel that it was his ideas that caused many people to not vote for him. Being part of the "Majority" group, a white male, I did not connect with Romney and felt as though his ideas were idiotic. However, I felt that president Obama was working for the American people with his ideas and Mitt Romney was only thinking about himself. This is why i do agree with the others that Obama was easier to connect to but I do not feel that it was the racial boundaries but the ideas that he had.

  5. I can see both sides of this opinion, and personally, i am split in my opinion. On one hand, I think that Mitt Romney's loss was not due to his lack of communication with minorities. This is because he already had a set public opinion about immigration. Many could argue that no matter what he said, this stand- off opinion would influence the voters more. On the other hand though, I can see how the lack of communication did effect Romney. Like Dan Borella stated, the minorities had a preconceived opinion about Romney as the polar opposite of him and a power hungry leader. But, if he had stepped out and genouinly spoken to these people, they could have changed their opinion. I bet there were plent of people who were against Obama, but then heard him speak and changed their minds as well.
